In my recent travels I stumbled across Queens Library new(ish)* home page which allows visitors to select their preference, “full homepage” or “simple”. What a brilliant way to satisfy both preferences

What I'd like to see is a "My Yahoo"-type interface where you can move things around on your library homepage so you can make it as cluttered or simple as you want: add RSS feeds, bring Premium Resources to the front page, delete Dispatch article links, place 24/7 icon at the top, etc...

Very intriguing! I just read today on Jakob Nielsen's usability site, that although users often ask for infinite tweaking of their personal portal, they very seldom use it. What does work is portals based on roles - which is what looks to be going on here. You are simply selecting your own role. Perhaps more options (but not too many) could be created based on role definitions we are already using to describe our patrons.
I like that. We're hoping to redo our website in the next year, I'm filing this away as a recommendation.
I will generally customize my homepage right when I first get the options . . . or soon after. Then I leave it that way for a long, long time. I like the idea of being able to choose simple, too - that would rock for me!
