Desperately seeking great Aussie library examples

In less than a month I’ll be in Melbourne guiding participants through a two day Library 2.0 master class workshop. I’m still a bit blown away by the wonderful opportunity to travel to Oz again and actually thrilled to be able to visit in the summer this time, instead of chilly July.

Anyway, in preparation for workshop I’m looking a few good examples of Australian libraries (public, academic, school or private) that have integrated 2.0 technologies and social media into their digital presence. Picture Australia of course stands out as one that I’m well aware of. As does WikiNorthia, but I know these are large scale projects and that there has to be lots of other examples (from libraries of all sizes and types) that may be well worth highlighting.

If you’ve got a great example of libraries integrating 2.0 technologies and concepts into their digital presence, I’d love to gather some more examples. Please feel free to leave a comment - or - email me helene.blowers(at)gmail.com - or better yet - twitter me @hblowers. I’d love to hear your suggestions.

One of my favorite examples of a library/community wiki project is from Ipswich, Queensland. "Remember When" http://rememberwhen.pbwiki.com/

Hi! Come to Brisbane! We're in a huge growth spurt as far as Web2.0 is concerned. http://elibcat.library.brisbane.qld.gov.au

Until recently I was merely "systems support" for BCC Library Services, but back in September my job was re-classified as Digital Media Librarian. It's all very new and open to us, but the very tip of the iceberg I believe.

Besides, I promise we'll show you through Brisbane Square library, which is so beautiful and awesome you will be in love at first sight with it, I am sure.

Ok I can certainly recommend looking into the Yarra Plenty Regional Library (local/public library), for their Web 2.0 programs overall, and see if you can fit in a visit to the Eltham branch library specifically:

The organisation:

Their web 2.0 programs:

Eltham branch library is an architectural award-winning design:

I quite like the Eastern Regional Library blogs for each of their branches:
http://knoxcitylibrary.blogspot.com is one of them.

Also (spruiking my own library), we at Brimbank are attempting to integrate web 2.0 stuff into our Joomla site by using GoogleMaps, Google Calendar, Facebook, etc etc.

Our Library Service in Adelaide City offers fantastic 2.0 services and applications - our blog has a semi-cult following (thanks jomfritz :-) ), we have a fantatic regular collection based ezine, both Facebook application and page and we also have redesigned our whole web and catalogue strategy to provide greater access to the collection. Very exciting and has increased our usage and customer satisfaction dramatically. Happy to talk more. visit our web site www.adelaidecitycouncil.com/libraries and email me at m.berghuis@adelaidecitycouncil.com
